The Hidden Church

When I got to the village, I heard the story of the hidden church. The villagers told me that, approximately 3 km from the centre of the town, there was a hidden church. It is said that it was built before the Ottomans and that it used to be Christian at first. This fact is explained because, before the Ottomans occupied Anatolia, there were inhabitants with different nationalities and different beliefs.

The site of the church is unique. It’s hidden in the mountains and the rough terrain makes it almost impossible to reach. Another interesting thing is that it was built below ground but it has a view of the plains. People use this site to spot attackers and bandits, too.

Some people of the region say that, because the Ottomans were Muslims, the church was abandoned. It was carved out of rock. Therefore, it survived for centuries.

Today, few people know that there is a church there at all. Only a few lucky outsiders like me found it here.
